Hip Arthroscopy Research: MASH Study Group Holds Annual Meeting in Atlanta

For over a decade, the Multicenter Arthroscopy Study of the Hip (MASH) Study Group has been at the forefront of medical research into hip injuries and arthroscopic treatments. The group’s innovative and collaborative approach enables its members, all board certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, to improve arthroscopic procedures for a multiplicity of hip injuries and problems.

The 2024 Annual Meeting of the MASH Study Group held in Atlanta, Georgia focused on hip arthroscopy research.

A Deep Focus on Issues of the Hip

Committed to researching best practices in treating hip problems, the hip surgeons and specialists in the MASH Study Group meet annually to focus energy and effort on improving their research efforts. Their multi-center approach enables them to collectively pool their research data. That larger reservoir of data leads to more profound insights into determining best practices for treating a myriad of hip-related injuries and issues, including but not limited to acetabular labrum tear, hip impingement, and ligamentum teres tear.

Annual Meeting to Progress Hip Arthroscopy Research

Held in Atlanta this year (where Dr. Carreira maintains his orthopedic practice), the annual meeting allows for a more focused effort from the investigators to improve our research efforts. The surgeons and specialists from leading medical schools, institutions, and practices across the USA spent two full days reviewing their methodologies and data sets to fine tune how and what data they record across their collective clinical practices.

This year’s gathering also centered on ongoing projects, areas of future study, and the coordination of manuscripts for publication. The team also considered fundraising opportunities as an avenue to expand their research into issues of the hip, and especially in preservation of the hip in athletic and pre-arthritic populations.

Welcoming New Members

From when Dr. Carreira founded the MASH Study Group in 2013, it has been comprised of leading doctors and medical specialists at some of the most renown hip centers. The research team includes folks from Peachtree Orthopedics (Atlanta), Drexel University School of Medicine (Philadelphia), Panorama Orthopedics (Denver), Premier Hip Arthroscopy (Los Angeles), Rush University Medical Center (Chicago), and more.

In 2024, the MASH Study Group was delighted to welcome two new participants:

Opportunities to Support Further Hip Arthroscopy Research

Following their annual meeting, the MASH Study Group welcomes donations and contributions from businesses, grant-giving entities, and even former patients grateful for the research-driven procedures developed and performed by the hip surgeons on the team. Those interested in exploring support opportunities with the MASH Study Group are invited to contact Dominic Carreira via MASHstudygroup@gmail.com.
