When the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy held its annual conference last month, the medical professionals of the MASH Study Group contributed significantly to the direction, content, and learning opportunities afforded to attendees. The gathering of leading arthroscopic surgeons specializing in hip preservation took place in Washington, D.C. on October 17-18.
MASH Study Group Leading the Way
The research group that Dr. Dominic S. Carreira founded and currently leads, Multicenter Arthroscopic Study of the Hip (MASH Study Group), played a significant role in the planning, organization, and delivery of the premier conference for hip arthroscopy. Dr. Andrew Wolff served as the Local Host Chair of the conference, while Dr. Thomas Wuerz served as the Scientific Program Chair.
The MASH Study Group team attended the ISHA conference in force. The following research group members presented papers based on their combined research into the treatment of and preservation of the hip:
- John J. Christoforetti, M.D.
- Dean Matsuda, M.D.
- Shane Nho, M.D., M.S.
- Anil Ranawat, M.D.
The MASH Study Group is a collective of research-minded hip surgeons and specialists with a strong interest in and focus on medical research. They explore hip injuries and treatments, in addition to practicing medicine and teaching at some of the world’s leading medical facilities and institutions.

Dr. Carreira Chaired Labral Treatment and Hip Arthroscopy Sessions
Given his clinical and research focus on both hip preservation and acetabular labrum tears, Dr. Carreira chaired two conference sessions: one on the range of labral treatment options and another on hip arthroscopy.
Included in the key takeaways that sessions that Dr. Carreira lead are that among treatment options for labral injuries and issues, reconstruction and augmentation of the labrum are increasingly adapted in clinical settings.
Hip Health: Bridging Innovation and Preservation
As shared on the conference website, the theme of the ISHA 2024 Meeting was “Hip Health: Bridging Innovation and Preservation.” The theme of the year a strong reminder of the deep value of innovating while maintaining and improving hip health through prevention, early detection, and preservation. The presentations at the leading conference for medical professionals with a concentration on hip preservation focused on emerging technologies and directions. The topics of presentations included the following:
- The future of labral preservation and treatment
- Hip instability – new frontiers in assessment and treatment
- Extra-articular hip pathology (GTPS, IFI, deep gluteal pathology, hip-spine syndrome, hamstring pathology) – new frontiers in assessment and treatment
- Biologics and articular cartilage – where do we go from here?
- Technology – innovations in AI, VR, AR and imaging
- Patient specific focus
