Dr. Dominic Carreira is a member of the Ankle Instability Group, which is an international group of orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons whose purpose is to study chronic ankle instability and its treatments. This study group aims to bring together key figures in ankle and foot, with a focus on arthroscopy, in order to create an ideal research environment, ensure the dissemination of new discoveries and techniques, and ensure the best care for patients with foot and ankle injuries.
Care Provision for Chronic Ankle Instability
As part of his role in this group, Dr. Carreira was recently consulted on an international panel of experts in order to help provide a consensus on care provision for patients suffering from chronic ankle instability.1 This study sought the opinion of 32 leading foot and ankle surgeons with clinical and scientific expertise on chronic ankle instability to help other surgeons around the world improve their care for patients with this pathology.
The study findings and recommendations included the use of an MRI in preoperative planning and early surgical treatment (when nonoperative treatment fails) for patients who present with mechanical laxity rather than functional instability and for high level athletes. The study also produced a treatment algorithm for use in recommending treatments to those suffering from chronic ankle instability.
