Labrum Reconstruction Chapter in New Hip Arthroscopy Textbook

A new textbook of hip arthroscopy, entitled Hip Arthroscopy and Hip Joint Preservation Surgery, is due to be published. Dr. Carreira and Dr. Philippon are writing one of the chapters related to hip labral reconstruction. Labral reconstruction is performed in the setting of an irreparable labrum and most commonly in revision surgery, for patients who have persistent hip pain and for those who have failed previous hip arthroscopy and labral debridement. The chapter will describe the surgical technique of arthroscopic Iliotibial band autograft or allograft and will be published by Springer.

Presentation at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons

Dr. Dominic Carreira will present “Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Fractures: Effect on NFL Career and Radiographic Parameters” at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, to be held in Chicago in March, 2013. As a member of the NFL Physicians Society, Dr. Carreira completed this research looking at this specific fracture type, which unlike most other foot fractures, has a higher rate of nonunion.

Proximal fifth metatarsal foot fractures (The Jones Fracture) is associated with significant difficulty with healing and missed playing time.

Dr. Carreira to serve as Associate Master Instructor at AANA courses July 19-21, 2012

The Arthroscopy Association of North America sponsors several “hands-on” surgical technique courses per year at the Orthopedic Learning Center in Chicago. These courses serve as instructional courses for orthopedic surgeons, and is attended by orthopedic surgeons from around the world. Dr. Carreira instructs at the foot and ankle and hip arthroscopy courses on a yearly basis.

Dr. Carreira to Deliver a Hip Arthroscopy Course in Spanish

Dr. Carreira will be teaching a hip arthroscopy course in Spanish on May 7 in Andover, MA. The course will be focused on surgical techniques, with hands on instruction in a lab, and will include a review of non-arthritic hip pain, labral tears, FAI, hip snapping, ligamentum teres injuries, and focal cartilage injuries. Dominic Carreira, M.D., Will Deliver a Course at Nashville Hip Arthroscopy Course on March 30-31, 2012

In addition to serving as faculty at Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) conferences in Chicago, Dr. Carreira also will be instructing on hip arthroscopy in Nashville in March. This upcoming course will include the following training in hip arthroscopy.

Presentation on the Shuttle Technique for Arthroscopic Hip Labrum Reconstruction at the International Vail Hip Arthroscopy Symposium

This symposium draws surgeons from all over the world. This year, Dr. Carreira again will serve as faculty, including instructing surgeons on the surgical techniques in the lab. In addition, Dr. Carreira will present his technique on hip labrum reconstruction using a shuttle technique during the lecture series.
In cases where the labrum tissue is torn beyond repair, replacing it with cadaver tissue is an alternative. This technique has been developed by Dr. Carreira. Patients who have been treated with this technique are being asked to enroll in a research study.
